Shortly about terminology:
•Layers are used to separate different elements of an image. A layer can be compared to a transparency on which imaging effects or images are applied and placed over or under an image.
•Bitmap layer is color bitmap.
•Empty layer is fully transparent.
•Bitmap layer is greyscale bitmap.
•Empty layer is white. While color means opaque. Black color means fully transparent.
•Resulting opacity of the layer is result of combination of the layer's opacity and layer's masks.
1.Layer bled mode – Sets how layer will blend with layer beneath. More about: “blend modes”.
2.Layer opacity – Sets opacity of the layer. Value 0% means that layer will be fully transparent.
3.Show only Mask – If this option is enabled then only content of currently selected mask will be displayed in the image view. If no mask is selected then no mask will be displayed.
4.Show mask Transparently – If this option is enabled then mask will be semi-transparently displayed in the image view. The semi-transparent mask will have red color. If no mask is selected then no mask will be displayed.
5.List of image's layers.
6.Currently selected layer. If layer is selected then tools (e.g. paint tools, filters) will affect only content of the currently selected layer. If you click right mouse button on the layer (in the list box and not over the mask) then “Layer Menu” will appear (see below).
7.Add Layer – Adds bitmap layer to the current image. Newly created layer will lie above currently selected layers. If group layer is selected then newly created layer will be placed in selected group.
8.Add Group Layer – Adds group layer to the current image. Newly created layer will lie above currently selected layers. If group layer is selected then newly created layer will be placed in selected group.
9.Add Bitmap Mask – Adds bitmap mask to the selected layer. Mask can be added only to one layer at a time. Each layer can have maximum four masks. Mask is greyscale image which controls opacity of the layer. While color means fully opaque. Black color means fully transparent.
10. Delete Layer – Deletes selected layers.
11.This button indicates whether visibility of the layer is turned on or off. You can turn visibility on or off by using this button.
12.This is thumbnail image of the layer's content.
13.This is thumbnail image of the mask's content. You can select mask by clicking left mouse button on this image. Selected mask has red border. If mask is selected then tools (e.g. paint tools, filters) will affect only content of the currently selected mask. If you want edit layer's content (not mask) then click left mouse button on the layer thumbnail (12). If you click right mouse button on the mask image then “Mask Menu” will appear (see below).
14.This button indicates whether mask is linked to the layer. You can link or unlink mask by using this button. If mask is linked to the layer then mask moves (when using move tool) together with layer.
15.Name of the layer.
16.This icon indicates whether is group opened or closed.
17.This icon indicates that this is group layer. Group layer can contain layers or group layers. Main usage for the group layer is that you can control position, visibility or opacity of group's layers at once. You can drag layers lying outside the group and drop them inside the group.
When right mouse button is clicked over the layer (in the list box and not over the mask) then menu with following commands will appear:
•Displays dialog which allows to change name of the layer.
•Duplicates selected layers.
•Newly created layers will lie above currently selected layers.
•Deletes selected layers.
•Merges selected layers in to the one layer.
When right mouse button is clicked over the layer's mask (in the list box) then menu with following commands will appear:
•Disables mask. This means that mask will not affect layer opacity.
•Stores copy of mask in the memory.
•Pastes mask from the memory in to the selected mask.
•Creates mask from the currently selected area.
•Creates selected area from the selected mask.
•Clears all mask with black color. Black color means that layer become fully transparent.
•Clears all mask with white color. White color means that layer's opacity will not affected.
•Removes mask from the layer.
